Feel Good Reason

Only last Thursday the Supreme Court decided we should be obligated to treat human beings with a common standard of decency, and now CERN announces the discovery of the Higgs Boson, a "particle" belonging to the field of density currently holding the mass of our universe together.

This peak inside the fabric of existence opens the door to the new normal of possibility, while closing a chapter of our collective history in which unsurety somehow led to certainty. Ironically, uncertainty has led to a more concrete understanding of what this whole universe thing is all about.

There is much to say. Much to do. Much to lament, and much to rejoice. We have been no less than what we needed to have been in order to arrive at this point as a planet. Our history serves us better than we can know, as the volume of meaning is unreachable in a single lifetime (at present).

It is only fitting that today be the day of the announcement (incidentally I'm sure). Questions may be asked about the significance of this discovery as compared to the grandness of liberty's entrance on the scene of world government 236 years ago, but as is the case with both, it's what we do with it that matters.

Happy Independence Day!
