Preempting Living Wage Ordinances

The latest Polymath Slacker video features a debate on what is known as Living Wage Ordinances. Living wage ordinances are laws passed by county or municipal government which state that any service vendor who contracts with said county or municipal government(s) must pay laborers wages and benefits to a standard above the poverty level. The details of the ordinance are individual to the local area. Ordinances are requested by the people of a local area by way of petitioning their local officials. The State Legislature in Florida passed, and the Governor of the State signed, a new law this year which preempts local governments' right to include wage provisions as a part of contracting vendors.

Florida must decide soon whether or not it lets a minority group with a great deal of political power, supported by large corporations and the business lobby, permanently divide the people of this State into socio-economic sub-classes. The creation and cementing of these divisions has been in full swing for over half a decade to date.
